Situated in the man-made peninsula of Banana Island, Nigeria, this development, named Banana Island E13 and designed by South African architectural firm SAOTA, comprises two exclusive villas, 13 smaller villas and a clubhouse. The luscious aspect forms the core of the development and integrates internal and external spaces.
Africanism spoke to SAOTA about the project:
What influenced the design?
The project is located in the middle of a very popular, upmarket neighbourhood in Lagos. Being one of the last few vacant sites, most of the surrounding properties have already been developed. There are some great views to the surroundings but our client had reasonable privacy concerns due to the close proximity of the neighbours. We were very attentive on the position and orientation of the living spaces. Careful planning meant we could position openings to allow ample natural light into the interior spaces, blocking out undesirable sights and maximising privacy. Warping the simple rectangular shapes on the façade meant certain corners could kick out, creating screened off outside terraces.
What would you say is the stand-out feature of the design?
Expressive horizontal lines accentuated with simple rectangular geometries.
How would you describe the style of the architecture?
What was the inspiration behind the design?
We worked with a strong modular grid on plan, making the project more cost effective and simplifying the construction process. On elevation we experimented with the composition of geometries to create an interesting façade with a relatable scale.
What sustainable initiatives were implemented in the design?
The layering of any building in Africa is one of the most important elements. Brise soleil-inspired feature screen walls were introduced where large glass partitions were exposed to the sun. Shading these openings helps to regulate the temperature on the inside of the building reducing the energy consumption.
